As an import and export trading company specializing in construction machinery, Tianjin Heliweiye primarily adopts the following three ocean shipping methods in our daily operations: Container Shipping (using specialized containers like Flat Racks and Open Tops), Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo), and Breakbulk Shipping. The choice among these depends mainly on the equipment’s size, weight, and whether it is self-propelled.

Our Primary Shipping Methods and Their Pros & Cons

1. Container Shipping (Flat Rack / Open Top)

For equipment of moderate size and weight, we recommend container shipping. We commonly use Flat Rack (FR) and Open Top (OT) containers, which are suitable for machinery within approximately 12m in length, 3m in width, 3m in height, and under 30 tons in weight.

• Advantages:
  • Superior Protection: The container provides a sealed environment, effectively protecting against rain, dust, and salt spray, reducing the risk of damage and theft during transit.
  • Reliable Schedules: We have long-term partnerships with major shipping lines, securing fixed slots and stable sailing schedules, allowing us to offer reliable delivery timelines to our clients.
  • Cost-Effective for Small Batches: For single units or small quantities, container shipping is often more economical than breakbulk.
• Disadvantages:
  • Strict Size Limits: Oversized, overwide, or overheight machinery cannot fit into standard specialized containers and will require alternative methods.
  • Loading/Unloading Requirements: Both the port of origin and destination need specialized crane equipment. We always verify port capabilities for our overseas clients in advance.

2. Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) Shipping

For self-propelled wheeled equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, loaders, and trucks, we frequently use RoRo shipping. The machinery is driven directly on and off the vessel, making the process highly efficient.

• Advantages:
  • Fast Turnaround: No cranes are needed—equipment drives on and off under its own power, significantly reducing port time and demurrage costs.
  • Simple Operation, Lower Damage Risk: Fewer lifting operations mean less risk of collision damage. This is especially advantageous for bulk shipments. We have successfully shipped multiple excavators via RoRo to markets like Mexico and Peru.
  • Strong Cost Competitiveness: For large volumes of self-propelled machinery, RoRo freight rates are often more competitive than container or breakbulk options.
• Disadvantages:
  • Equipment Must Be Operational: Machinery must be in good working order to drive on and off. We ensure every exported unit undergoes rigorous start-up and mobility testing before loading.
  • Limited Protection: Equipment is more exposed to sea salt and moisture inside the vessel. We take extra anti-rust and protective wrapping measures to mitigate this.
  • Port Availability: RoRo service requires specialized ramps at both origin and destination. We verify port facilities in advance and provide alternative solutions when necessary.

3. Breakbulk Shipping

When equipment is too large, too heavy, or irregularly shaped to fit into any container or RoRo vessel, we use breakbulk shipping. Cargo is loaded individually as pieces using shipboard or shore cranes.

• Advantages:
  • No Size or Weight Limits: Capable of handling single pieces weighing dozens to hundreds of tons and exceeding 26 meters in length—such as large cranes, pile drivers, and crawler excavators.
  • High Flexibility for Project Cargo: Ideal for exporting complete sets of machinery for large-scale mining, infrastructure, and construction projects.
• Disadvantages:
  • Higher Cost and Risk: Lifting costs are higher, cargo is exposed to weather and sea conditions, and insurance premiums increase accordingly. We always secure comprehensive marine insurance for every shipment.
  • Less Frequent Schedules, Slower Transit: Breakbulk vessels have fewer sailings and longer voyage times. We plan ahead and coordinate closely with our clients to minimize waiting periods.
